"Shut Up!?" Modern Spin on an old Tradition

The Four Gates of Speech

An old Sufi tradition advises us to speak only after our words have managed to pass through four gates.

At the first gate we ask ourselves,  “Are these words true?”
If so, we let them pass on; if not, back they go.

At the second gate we ask, Are these words necessary?”
If so, we let them pass on; if not, back they go.

At the third gate we ask, “Are these words beneficial?”
If so, we let them pass on; if not, back they go.

At the fourth gate we ask, “Are these words kind?”
If so, we let them pass on; if not, back they go.

If the answer to any of these is no, then......."shut up!"

Featured in Natural Awakenings March Edition

Thanks to Natural Awakenings Magazine (Fairfield County)  for the News Brief  (pg. 5) which they ran about Periwinkle Health in their March edition. Here's an exerpt:

'Expressive Therapuetic Coaching' is the new term for techniques Allison B. Spitzer, M.A. began using successfully in 1975. Spitzer says that a blend of practical suggestions and creative opportunities for soul searching and changing one's outlook or behavior can be extremely effctive, especially when sessions tackle difficult issues with humor, compassion and action.......

'Support, counsel, a close look at one's daily life, and simple, enjoyable arts activities can foster insight and become powerful motivators for change.' Spitzer, one of only a handlful of expressive therapuetic coaches available to children, focuses on (those) who must manage  ADD, obesity, and depression. Her clients include parents of difficult children, anxious teens, and young adults....

'Completing my master's in 1975, I drew from psychology, the arts and communication theory to teach and help individuals....' Spitzer adds. 'Then I was a square peg in a round hole. Today the healing value of the arts and pragmatic benefits of coaching are widely recognized.'
